I hope so as I have been hurt by love , constantly A beautiful story at any time of the year but especially appropriate to read at Christmas. An old shoemaker, Martin Avdeitch, has seemingly lost all and wishes only to be allowed to die. As the story progresses he learns valuable, eternal truths. The message is clear; "As to your own despair-that comes because you wish to live for your own happiness. Love in action. The lonely old shoemaker finally finds peace and happiness in his life by showing love towards others.
It wasn't because of some church program, or because he had to do it to show others he had an active faith. It was because he had buried himself in the Word of God and had noticed the needs of the people around him. In his own quiet way, he reached out and showed love to his neighbors. If he should be whipped for stealing an apple, what should be done to us for our sins? For we must learn to let go, to forgive others for their part, because we all do mistakes, and just like we love to be forgiven for our mistakes, we must do the same ourselves and forgive everyone.
Tolstoy preaches the Gospel There are some who might consider this story trite and contrived, but as a man of faith, I found it inspiring. It is doubtful Tolstoy will convert anyone with this tale, but believers will enjoy the story of a man who puts his faith in action. This is not a conversion story but a parable of the finest order. An absolute page-turner! This short read was one that I simply could not put down once I had started it. I wasn't expecting it to be so good, but it is truly a classic. I highly recommend it.
I know that it says that there is not a Kindle edition, but I read it on Kindle. This is a charming short story that can be easily be added to any list of "things to read at Christmas. Martin is a poor cobbler whose life is changed when he begins to read and apply Scripture to his life.

Martin glanced up at her through the window, and saw that she was a stranger, poorly dressed, and with a baby in her arms. She stopped by the wall with her back to the wind, trying to wrap the baby up, though she had hardly anything to wrap it in.
The woman had only summer clothes on, and even they were shabby and worn. Through the window, Martin heard the baby crying, and the woman trying to soothe it, but unable to do so. Martin rose and going out of the door and up the steps, he called to her. He invited her in for some food and gave her warmer clothes and money.

Martin also told her about Jesus and she thanked him and left 6. After a while, Martin saw an apple woman stop just in front of his window. She had a large basket, but there did not seem to be many apples left in it. On her back, she had a sack full of wood chips, which she was taking home.
The sack evidently hurt her, and she wanted to shift it from one shoulder to the other. So, she put it down on the footpath and placing her basket on a post, began to shake down the chips in the sack. Then he saw a young boy stealing from an older lady. He went outside and settled their argument as he extended love and compassion towards the both of them.
Her Path to Closer Union with God and Greater Love for Others
That night while Martin wondered why God had not visited him three figures appeared in his home, the three people he had showed hospitality to that day. They said that when he helped them he was helping God. Martin then realized that God had indeed visited him, and he accepted Him well. And Martin's soul grew glad.
He crossed himself, put on his spectacles and began reading the Gospel just where it had opened; and at the top of the page he read: "I was a hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in. You just clipped your first slide!
