Politicians who downplay ideology are wrongly tagged by us as opportunists who are into politics for themselves and not for the public. But our desire for ideologists comes at a price, because it creates the wrong incentives for our policymakers. Politicians are much more rational than us voters. They are governed primarily by their instinct for political survival.

Our need for them to follow an ideology means that they will obey it to appease us. They even believe in their ideology to convince us that they will do so. There can be no ideology that is superior on all issues and in all circumstances, except for the ideology of choosing the best policy for each issue separately and independently of political orientation. We need our politicians to make smart political decisions that are aligned with the public interest. Sometimes such a smart decision is liberal; at other times, conservative. Born at the end of the 19th century with great promises for a better society, ideology at the end of the 20th century has nothing to show for itself but hundreds of millions of dead, murdered by the three greatest idealogues of all time: Hitler, Stalin and Mao.

When that happens we shall all be better off. If there is any short term risk that Australian involvement in Africa will increase the risk of Ebola coming to Australia then the only way that the Australian people would support involvement is if the involvement could be proven to decrease the longer term risk of Ebola coming to Australia and in that regard the involvement of Australia will be all but insignificant in stopping the spread in Africa.

The current West African outbreak is almost certainly beyond the threashold for contact tracing in fact, long well beyond it, with contacts in the ,'s or even millions so any 'intervention' of necessity can only help treat a small percentage of sufferers. In that circumstance Western intervention treats chiefly the symptoms of the Western media circus. This epidemic will have to burn itself out. It cannot be stopped by human intervention at this stage, the case numbers are too large. The most important thing is to stop it spreading to neighbouring countries.

If you want to help the people of West Africa, help them close borders, limit people movement and send them huge quantities of bottled lemonade which, if consumed flat, is the best low-tech treatment possible that can be administered without medical supervision. Locally, they need to use those who have recovered from the virus and are immune to collect and bury the dead as well as distribute the lemonade. Where possible, using non-immune people to treat or manage the sick should be avoided. And this includes well-intended Westerner's. GRF, Sounds like we should shut down our borders to asylum seekers from Africa We better shut our boarders completely, and don't let anyone leave, if we don't want to live with a threat of the Ebola virus.

Treat the patients with decarbonated lemonade - why didn't anyone think of that before? And then get recovered patients to help out. They had the virus so now they're immune. Don't viruses have the ability to transmute? Next you'll be asking god or one of them to intervene. Yep Bradford, that's the way you do it. The most valuable resource they have are people who have recovered from the virus not Western do gooders running around in space suits. And yes, they are immune to the current strain.

And if you want to prey it won't do any harm. GRF, "And if you want to prey it won't do any harm. Or perhaps you would like to explain your novel concept to a warthog who has just been "preyed" upon by a leopard. I think that Bradford would be better off praying, don't you? But the problem with your weird idea about getting the victims of Ebola to provide the response is that the victims of Ebola are sick. They have been through a life-threatening illness and, in almost every case, will be suffering from serious damage to vital organs.

errorism parcel

The other problem with your whacky scheme is that very few of the people who have survived Ebola have the sort of medical training required to make a meaningful contribution. The vast majority of the people who have contracted Ebola are not. They are simply farmers, workers, shop keepers, tinkers, drivers and such. The problem is that Cuba is still carrying most of the load and, as a relatively poor nation, it is hard to see how they can sustain this indefinitely. Without help, even the brilliant Cuban international health system cannot be expected to cope alone. Rather than pestering the Iraqi government for permission to shoot Arabs, Julie Bishop should be heading for Havana with an offer to place Australian medical resources, expertise and personnel at the disposal of the Cuban disaster response system.

This is not a time to worry about ideology. The Cubans may have faults, but they have clearly got it right when it comes to health systems and disaster relief. We should provide the petrol, but let them drive. Obviously you only use people who have recovered and are capable of working.

You don't need medical training to bury the dead or distribute and administer lemonade. The lemonade works because the sugar pump is usually the last thing to go in gastro infections and is the only really reliable way to re-hydrate low-tech. Already saved millions of lives. It won't stop many deaths but will prevent a lot of co-morbidity and accelerate the recovery of survivors. Yes it's simple but one of the reasons it works so well in such situations is precisely because it is very simple. The intervention is to keep those in the infectious, and obvious stages, stage of their infection away from others.

In short no new cases. With viruses it is about no new cases. This is how we measure epidemics, for examples HIV fewer than new cases a year is the measure that prevention methods are working. If it were as simple as lemonade this wouldn't be a problem. Their antibodies aren't going to be administered to others and this isn't the movie "Outbreak" where we can just find a monkey and it'll all be ok.

People who have recovered from the disease are usually in bad shape and even with the antibodies they are still vulnerable to reinfection which may well kill them, especially in their compromised state. Further, good luck finding an army of well trained nurses and doctors who are now healthy survivors. Closing borders doesn't work because epidemiology is all about information. If you know where a person has been you can set up the monitoring, isolation and medical responses in those areas. If you close the borders, people avoid authorities, they still travel and you lose the most important thing in epidemiology - information.

I would also say that closing borders in Liberia and Sierra Leone would be difficult. Those countries have had civil wars recently, meaning your police infrastructure is lacking, and local knowledge of smuggling routes is very good. This is a simple RNA virus Nige, those who have recovered are immune to re-infection with the same strain.

If the infection reaches 1,, cases in Jan. The alternative is to have it spreading througout Africa. The Nigerian border is apparently already closed. This is something Western troops can help with. There is only ONE way to keep Ebola out of Australia, and that is to throw all the resources we can muster at it now, in west Africa.

If we don't get on top of it while it is still largely contained in one corner of one continent, there is no way that we can stop it from getting into Australia. I've heard lots of pathetic, nonsensical excuses from Mr Abbott and co, but there can be no excuses for not acting. Do we really believe that Australia's ridiculous mish-mash of private and public health services would cope any better?

While "advanced" western nations are starting to realise just how dangerously exposed years of playing politics with their health systems has left them, it is Cuba that is leading the way in the global response to Ebola. There have been no infection control failures in Europe and the United States, v. The only Ebola related outbreaks in the US and Spain the only two Western countries that have seen Ebola cases are outbreaks of panic and speculation.

If and when there is an Ebola case in Australia the same containment procedures will prevent an outbreak here that prevented outbreaks in the US, in Spain, in Nigeria and in Senegal. The risk in Australia is the same as in other Western countries- the risk to front line health workers, not a risk of a widespread outbreak.

The US is a particular worry because the vast majority of its population has such limited access to healthcare that, if the outbreak continues, many people showing symptoms will go undiagnosed. There are plenty of people in various levels of government in the United States at the moment who are starting to remember why it is important to have a health system that includes ALL of your citizens.

Australia is in a better position than the United States, but the chaotic nature of our fragmented health system does pose some problems. As I have pointed out, Cuba is leading the world's response to this crisis. They are ideally placed to do so because they have been providing health services in well over a hundred countries for many years ago.

Many people died in New Orleans as a direct result of the US' refusal of this offer. The US failed to respond to Katrina, and it is failing to respond to the current crisis. When it comes to looking after the health, safety and security of the people, Cuba is centuries ahead of the west. There have been no infection control failures relating to people returning from providing assistance unAustralian These brave people will be more and more thoroughly screened and quarantined.

The world health authorities say this has to be stopped at source. People continue to die while others play politics. We will not be able to assist Asia if our underprepared personnel are in Africa, approx 30 hours away. It will be too late. And, while our health system may be one of the most developed in the Asia-Pacific region, but it is still hopelessly unprepared for an emergency like the one we currently face. Australia has eight public health systems and literally thousands of private companies reaping profits from our health system.

There is virtually no coordination of these resources and it would be difficult to take control of them all and coordinate their actions if this became necessary. Of particular concern are our health information systems. Despite the best efforts of the previous government to standardise and connect the various services and datasources across the health system, resistance from Tory states and the Abbott opposition seriously diluted the effectiveness of these measures. It is probably too late to nationalise the entire health system in time to make a difference to this particular emergency, but serious consideration should be given to working towards a single, public health system as one of the "lessons learned" from this experience.

But, getting back to the current crisis, which is still largely confined to west Africa, that is where we want to keep it. There are several possible cures on the horizon, including a very promising Cuban-Thai breakthrough that, with the right level of financial support, could produce a vaccine in months.

If we can ensure Ebola stays where it is, and this will take a massive effort from western nations, we will be able to get it under control and possibly even eradicate it at source. Sitting on our hands and waiting for it to hit Asia would be suicidal. What a weird world you live in. Latest trend for you and your fellow leftie travelers to pursue Rabbit Infestation destroying the world..

In medicine, an "acute" problem is generally short-lived, and presents all of its challenges in a relatively short space of time. Hitting your thumb with a hammer causes acute pain believe me, I have tried this on several occasions, always with the same result. You feel it immediately but, if you are lucky enough not to break a bone, the pain will be gone in a couple of days. If, however, your hammer lands on the knuckle of your thumb and shatters the bones around the joint, you may develop arthritis, which will provide you with a textbook example of chronic pain.

And the same can be said for both Ebola and anthropogenic climate change. There is insufficient space here to explain exactly why the global politico-economic system has failed so comprehensively, but the mere existence of the two aforementioned problems shows that it has. Now, both acute and chronic problems require attention. If you hit your thumb with a hammer, you will probably need some short-term pain relief regardless of whether the injury results in chronic arthritis.

If you have chronic arthritis, you will also need treatment. Neither is more serious than the other - it is all a matter of timeframe. But, with the Ebola outbreak, we simply have to respond to what is already happening. Both problems threaten human existence. Both require urgent action. Playing one off against the other is the height of stupidity.

Heartily agree Paul. The speed with which Tony Abbott committed to the fruitless search for MH, the shooting down of MH17 - with over-commitment of personnel - and now the 'mission' in Iraq - with troops STILL awaiting Iraq permission to act, should be more than matched with a commitment to combatting the deadly Ebola virus.

This is about supporting the living, not recovery of the dead as in the two airline disasters. More telling is the idea that this government has committed nearly ten times the amount they intend to spend on helping fight this outbreak towards putting priests within grabbing distance of your children It's not even planning to allow discussion about climate change - another pressing cause which should be addressed.

It's also time we were told how much was thrown at the Malaysian Airlines disasters, which were used by Tony Abbott and Julie Bishop as a bignoting exercise of self-promotion. Still nothing has been achieved in either case. There is an old adage "Prevention is better than cure" - I suggest this head-in-the-sand government, starts applying that principle NOW, before it's too late. Not to mention the witch hunt into the Home Insulation Scheme, purely as an act of vengeance by Abbott, in his quest to destroy Labor's name.

Hey -let's not forget the That's one boat they don't want to stop. It's all about priorities. The problem is that Ebola represents two distinct issues: 1. Humanitarian issue; and 2. Global health issue. Charities are demanding more resources for the first problem. Governments are unwilling to do so, since they're busy committing all their resources for the second problem. When problems are difficult to solve or cost money, the judeo-christian right can always hope their god will see fit to fix it for em, hey curly?

Obviously your non-god or Gaia isn't doing such a crash-hot job either. Wasnt there an article about health workers in one of these nations going on strike because the government cant afford to pay them for all the extra hours they are doing? Zing, Charities are a multi-billion dollar industry Our government has bee missing in action - totally. The US and some European countries have at least made a token effort to send doctors and other medical professionals.

But, as usual when there is a humanitarian crisis somewhere in the world, it is the Cuban government that has provided the leadership and resources to combat the threat. And this in no fluke. Cuba currently has over 30, health professionals working around the globe, in countries, in some cases like East Timor providing an entire health system from scratch.

In other countries, they provide affordable pharmaceuticals, train health professionals, and conduct joint research programmes like, for example, the joint Cuban-Thai project that has produced a synthetic antibody for the Ebola virus that can attack the virus inside infected cells and stop it reproducing, and the joint Cuban-Brazillian project to eradicate meningitis from Africa's "meningitis belt".

The humanitarian crisis and the global health issue of which you speak are inseparable and indivisible. Cuba has it right, the West has it wrong. Countries can defend themselves in a number of ways. The Cubans have chosen to defend their country by working to eliminate the causes of war and political violence poverty, disease, inequality, maldistributed resources, hunger BEFORE they result in conflict. We wait for a conflict to develop and then try to fix it using brute force. A choice between showing how macho we are then committing the country to a third failure in Iraq with no endgame over the real crisis of our time the Ebola outbreak, well which would you chose.

Abbott loves the big boy toys. Paula you're the one who has misread the sentiment of the Australian people. Africa is a combination of large populations, poor sanitation and insufficient healthcare. An epidemic was merely a matter of time. Until you stop Africa from being a human petri-dish, any money we throw at Ebola is just treating symptoms and not causes. The 18 million dollars we throw at the outbreak is wasted. The millions we've spent on Australia's medical systems and containment procedures is not. Zing we are stopping professional people who know what they are doing from going there.

Do you seriously think the middle east is any different to Africa regarding sanitation or healthcare. Ebola doesn't have the same ring to it compared to a war politically. The WHO are funded every year by many countries to combat this sort of thing, all professionals who specialise in this sort of out break if there is a failing it clearly falls back on them. I believe the term closing the gate after the horse has bolted relates here but the WHO is blaming all the neighbours for not telling them the horse was gone.

Algernon, Nobody is being prevented from going. Something they have not finalised. It would be irresponsible for any government to commit professionals to deal with a problem, without adequate plans to manage the risk. A perfect example is the failure of the US plan to manage risk that has resulted in 2 stateside infections of health care workers.

Ned, "They don't need doctors. There's no cure. Thanks so much for clearing up the mystery. So far, we have not found a cure for Ebola, but a joint Cuban-Thai research project could have one within months with the right support from rich western nations. But, despite the fact that Ebola has no known cure at the present moment, it CAN be treated and some of those treated recover. The good thing about this is that those who have recovered have antibodies to the disease that can be used to treat other infected people, and just in the act of treating Ebola patients, we learn so much more about the disease, and this knowledge will eventually contribute to the cure.

Africa has no shortage of unqualified people to provide the unskilled labour required in the response to this epidemic. What they don't have is trained medical professionals on the ground, who can actually treat the disease, harvest the antibodies, and stop the disease from spreading. So far, the only meaningful and coordinated response has come from the Cubans. The UN should put them in charge of the response and call on all affluent member nations to provide the medical personnel, equipment and funding required to stop Ebola in its tracks.

But we should not stop there. For our own safety, we need to invest heavily in the elimination of the chronic problems facing Africa, especially those of disease, poverty and lack of education. We have some catching up to do. How are we stopping anyone going to West Africa to give their expertise in the care of people with Ebola?

A citation would be helpful. SueB, "How are we stopping anyone going to West Africa to give their expertise in the care of people with Ebola? Even on a pragmatic level, the current government's response to recent world events has been counter-productive.

Mr Abbott and Ms Bishop's intemperate remarks concerning the tragic loss of MH17 which now appears to have been shot down by a UKRAINIAN missile have the potential to seriously degrade both our economic position and our national security, and Mr Abbott's unforgivable and inexplicable threat to physically assault the Russian head of state has made Australia an international laughing stock.

In pestering the Iraqis for an invite to their civil war, Australia has made itself a much larger target than it would have been if it had kept its nose out of other people's affairs. But Australia's contribution will be largely irrelevant to the outcome. Ebola is by far the greatest threat to the safety of individual Australians, the health of the Australian economy, and Australia's national security, at least since the end of WW2.

Perhaps, Abbott should take Menzies example - flee the country and let Shorten take over. Every rancid ingredient possible to ensure this continent remains a humanitarian disaster zone and the handout capital of the world. Almost without exception the people who run the countries in Africa have been and continue to be totally and utterly incompetent. I have seen it over my lifetime and my children and their children will see it over theirs.

Their 'enlightenment' can't come quick enough for them and the rest of the world. Zing, "Africa is a combination of large populations, poor sanitation and insufficient healthcare. While we sing the praises of capitalism's ability to deliver a constant stream of stuff that we don't need and, in most cases would be better off without, the people of Africa confront the realities of capitalisms failure on a daily basis.

But it is not all bad news. Huge inroads are being made into the problem by the Cubans, who have been in the business of international medicine for many years, and more recently the Brazilians. There are twenty-three countries in Africa whose development and prosperity have been severely hampered by the scourge of Meningitis A and B. When the WHO issued an urgent appeal for help, Cuba and Brazil responded jointly, setting up a programme to manufacture the vaccine and distribute it in the countries of the "Meningitis Belt".

Africa does not have to remain the dumping ground for all of the failures of capitalism. The people of Africa are human beings, just like us. In fact, if you dig deep enough, we are all Africans. Cuba and Brazil are leading the way when it comes to lifting Africa out of poverty and disease, and we should follow their example.

You might be surprised what the sentiment of the Australian people is. You misjudged the boat people and the Indonesian spying row. You might have misjudged this one as well. I think you will find Aust want us to prepare to support the Asia Pacific region if ebola breaks out into this part of the world. Cannot do that if our unprepared citizens are 30 hours away in Africa. Thats the bigger political risk here. I think you parroting the government line bren without looking at the real issue. Your also conflating the argument with the 30 hour flight when Europe is a lot closer.

Bren, That's like saying we will let the burglar in the house but catch him on the way out with the goods in his hand. The same as stopping the boats once they get here, instead of solving the problem at the source before they get on board. If business operated like this they would go broke in their first year. But hey , this is an LNP Government we are talking about. What, are both guys going? Surely one of them should stay and protect Asia and the Pacific - ahh, I see your point now.

I agree with some of your sentiments Paul. As I usually do. Australia does not have the medical staff or logistical ability to help tackle ebola. My question is why? Why don't we as a country have infectious diseases experts available to send with teams to assist. The state health departments are only just now getting a plan together in case it comes here. From what I've seen from the inside, we are ill equipped to deal with infectious diseases inside the country and we will fail if large numbers are infected here. Let alone assisting in another country. Yes, let's commit to offering some financial support but neither our army or our health departments are able to contribute anything on this front at present.

I believe our only hope is to help develop a vaccine. As that is something that the Australian system does very well. Response to a catastrophe of this nature is beyond us though. This disappoints me greatly. Why, you ask? During this last week I have had the opportunity to speak with someone who would be a frontline health worker at a designated Ebola station in Australia.

I have been told that protocol is being prepared on the run. The briefing that occurred at the beginning of last week has been substantially changed this week. Have also been told that staff who could not attend the briefing because they were left to manage their area have not subsequently been briefed. Re the issue of infection control, isolation, air suits etc. The clinical staff using these more elaborate infection control measures need to exercise an extreme level of mindfulness. The suits, particularly the headgear, are heavy.

Despite this, there is no change in shift arrangements for those working in isolation. It has been suggested that protocols were breached in Texas after de-suiting and it raises the question as to whether fatigue was a factor? Additionally, some areas of operations are managed by contractors, not permanent staff which leads to a further devolution of responsibility and control. My question is this.

Why is there a need for this sudden public health response at this time? At the same time, we are in the midst of a highly reactive, inflamed electorate ready to bounce of the walls in relation to any perceived threat. Sadly, Paula is right about the mood of the electorate I believe. However, this is not "fortress" Australia eg border protection but rather "seige" Australia where people are turning on each other in a kind of panic.

I cannot help but think of Plato's Allegory of the Cave - people jumping at shadows. And I would say that this atmosphere has been cleverly and cynically crafted by those who benefit from this largely manufactured fear. Who will show real leadership? Since when were Oxfam the WHO? Oxfam's biggest task these days is political lobbying. The very large NGO's are self-sustaining entities, burning through vast amounts of money in administration and fat salaries.

The Aceh tsunami response was typical - NGO's fighting to get in on the act but achieving little. Meanwhile they demand more and more government funds. One million deaths by ? Based on what empirical evidence? Where is the epidemialogical study? The outbreak is highly localised.

Previous Ebola outbreaks have burned themselves out - and there has been lots of them. Just more PR fluff designed to get headlines. Paul, You are quite right. It is all a matter of priorities and, at the moment, Australia and most of the "advanced western democracies" have their priorities backwards. While billions are being wasted on chasing an historical blip called ISIS, the crisis building in west Africa is perhaps the most severe acute to our way of life, our national security and even the future of our civilisation, that we have faced for many centuries. It has the potential to make the Spanish Influenza epidemic that followed WW1, look like a sniffle.

Despite what Paula thinks, this is an issue well beyond politics. If the threat was to the dominance of western power, as it is in Syria, and the suggested solution was violent military action, you can bet your back teeth that Abbott and Bishop would be pestering west African governments for an invitation to join the turkey shoot.

But when it comes to doing something that really does need to be done, and in which Australia could make a huge contribution, we are missing in action. I wonder what the Cuban people would make of Australia's reluctance to help. Australia has a GDP of over a trillion dollars a year and a population of about 23 million. Cuba has a GDP of just over 70 billion dollars and a population of 14 million. Cuba currently has over medical professionals working in the affected countries, who are among 30, Cuban doctors, nurses and paramedics working in over countries around the world.

The East Timorese health system, which has been responsible for a halving of the infant mortality rate since independence, and an increase in life expectancy of over 20 years, has been provided by Cuba. When medical professionals abandoned South Africa after the fall of apartheid, Cuba stepped in to fill the breach. As I said, this issue is way above politics. We have only one chance to get this right. But it appears that we would rather shoot Arabs than help humanity including ourselves , and we should be very ashamed of that.

Well said, Paul Taylor. Perhaps if our government stopped seeing the difficulties around repatriation of infected healthworkers as a a barrier to our participation and viewed it as a challenge we could get beyond the prevailing recalcitrance. We have shown a "can do" attitude in involving ourselves in the Iraq conflict even though we may not be welcome or have a clear role. How about adopting the same approach in West Africa where our expertse is desperately needed.

Paul, the same was said of swine flu just a few short years ago. The federal minister of the day trotted out the line of world pandemic, the health authorities proclaimed the same. And in reality, what happened? Very little. It seems that too often our health authorities cry wolf. Jay, " And in reality, what happened? Swine flu did not get away because the international response was effective in not letting it get away from us. But it is a different story with Ebola. Ebola, on the other hand, broke out in a few dirt-poor West African countries and, as a result, has managed to secure a foothold from which it can, if unchecked by concerted international action, spread across the globe.

But don't worry, we've seen this before. When we learned in the 's that unregulated emissions of chloro-flurocarbons were eroding the ozone layer and that this could have disastrous consequences for agriculture, biodiversity and human health, the world responded, replacing CFCs with less damaging gases. As a result, we have just learned that the depletion of the ozone layer has not just been stopped, it has been reversed.

So now we have climate change deniers citing the failure of the ozone depletion crisis to end all life on earth as proof that we should sit on our hands rather than face the challenges posed by CO2 pollution in our atmosphere. The simple fact is that, when we respond as an international community of human beings, we can achieve great things.

We know for sure now that we CAN make changes that CAN influence the behaviour and properties of the atmosphere, just as our response to swine flu showed us how effective we CAN be if we work together to contain and control a potentially pandemic disease. We could but considering it takes years for projects to go from thought to reality the epidemic will be long over before we have a portable mecial unit that you dream of. It then needs to be maintained at high cost, after all it doesnt work if the walls have broken down orthe generator doesnt start because they are old and havent been touched for even 12 months let alone the yrs between uses this would experince.

Nice thought but not practical. This spiel is party political crap, of course. What it doesn't do is countenance there can be a humanitarian aspect, as do those who attack Oxfam and anyone else who have decades of humanitarian motive. The party political bias is Liberal, of course, and we see once again how a Liberal can only see things as cynical politics. They have degenerated to the point they are now completely hollow. People dying can be cared about, but only when it is opportune.

Abbott has an 'humanitarian mission' in Iraq, but ignores the plague of Ebola, the thousands of deaths and the risk it presents. For the benefit of Paula Matthewson, "mainstream voters" retract support from "mainstream parties" over "mainstream issues". Perhaps only in the furthest reaches of a disconnected-from-reality brain could an article like this be scraped together from whatever's been splashed on the floor and walls after last night's party.

If "the politics of Ebola" is what's keeping the people who lavish us with such maturity as "girlie men" and "shirtfronting" awake at night in feverish excitement of an impending reversal of their fortunes, then I'd reckon Ebola is already here and leaping from office to office in a large white building high on a hill in Canberra. By my reckoning, if it is indeed drifting around the corridors that means "the politics of Ebola" is already a done-and-dusted, yesterday's news story.

I have no fundamental problem with partisans spilling their drivel in public - but they must seem to be trying to mount a genuine, serious attempt rather than laughable blurt like this. Stopping Ebola from reaching Australia is currently a mainstream issue and if so much as a single case of Ebola occurs in Australia then it will be the mainstream issue, wry. It is far from being "done-and-dusted".

If a case does occur in Australia and Labor is seen by the public as having obstructed the government in keeping it out then it will bite Labor hard and deep. In today's world a virus moves at the speed of an A Airbus. With the USA and many nations in Europe and Asia sending people back and forth the idea that by not sending anyone from Australia will prevent it reaching our shores is juvenile fantasy. I know there are many Abbott minded people who would love nothing better, but we do live in a REAL world. Ebola won't be stopped by packing it an orange life boat and towing it to Indonesia.

In the four other countries it has been in found in Spain, the US, Senegal and Nigeria the only cases have been people travelling from Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea and the medical staff who treated the travellers. In those countries the virus has been contained. The idea that this is a pandemic festering on our doorstep is simply wrong, but any case in Australia will be seen as a failing in border security as currently the only way for it to come to Australia is through someone who has just come from Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea. It would not be difficult to institute a ban on travel to Australia for any foreign national who has travelled to those countries and to institute a lengthy quarantine time for any Australian citizen who has travelled to those countries.

That is currently what Australia should be doing. Consider - Some infected person goes from one of the African countries to any European country, then transmits the virus to an Australian visitor. Your views, which seem to reflect all political views, are frightening. The only transmissions outside of Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea have been from a traveller from Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea to a local health worker treating them, Bradfordlad.

Compare it with the HIV virus or measles.
