A nonfiction book complete with beautiful pictures of seals and a truly great story, what more could you ask for? This book is captivating for both children and adults. The photographs alone make this book worth looking at, but add to it the story of how a boy and the organization Seal Sitters protects harbor seals in Puget Sound in Washington state and the book becomes the perfect tool for a nonfiction lesson about seals, animal protection and respecting other species. I plan to use this book for a nonfiction lesson with first grade! Aug 24, Lynda Shoup added it Shelves: nonfiction , science. Many of the books are written for children and encourage them to get involved. This book is a solid title to add to such a collection.
The photographs, especially those that showed what a young boy had to contribute, were excellent for grabbing a young reader's attention. Leopard & Silkie: One Boy's Quest to Save the Seal Pups (My Readers)
The Sitters actively keep watch on particular beaches and warn beach goers especially those with dogs to stay away from the seal pups who may have been left alone by their mothers for several hours while the mother goes to feed. Written in narrative, this would be an easy read aloud. The pictures are large and clearly support the text which is nice for young listeners and also for our English learners.
Tier two vocabulary around theme words like perseverance and commitment could be introduced. Caution: The author ventures a tad close to anthropomorphizing - assuming how the seal must be feeling at a certain point in the book. There is a picture with the seal pup with a paw on his forehead and the text says "Leopard name of seal pup shivers and covers his face to hide from all the bustle. This might make for a good discussion with students.

Cute adorable seals definitely were an eye-catcher but what could be the evil horror that they needed rescue from? Especially one that would allow a boy to become a hero? The book gives children and other readers a chance to see what it takes for a northwestern seal to raise her young and also the challenges that the youngster must face in a world that is growingly more crowded than what it used to be. At the s With this particular book I came to it without truly knowing what it would be about.
At the same time the reader is learning the plight of the seals they are also learning about a solution that locals have come up with to help these animals to continue to hold onto their world. The lessons about wildlife and the reach the book has to inspire other children to find a way to help their own local animals will be a treasure that can be received from the book. And although there wasn't really much of a big and terrifying disaster that the seals needed rescue from it still gives the reader a chance to see that small steps can still make a hero and that sometimes to grow-up we just need a friend to help push us along.
A definite good book for those who are into saving animals and their environment while seal fans will just love the photographs in their brightness as they share the tone of the story. Oct 11, Bethe rated it really liked it Shelves: childrens-non-fict. Who can resist seal pups? This book is filled with photos of 2 seal pups in Puget Sound and the Seattle group who watches over them. The text closely matches the photo on each page and would be an engaging read aloud for elementary age students.
