It's the last couple seconds of the game and he ends up missing a shot which ends in their loss. After the game David's coach tells him how he played a great game and not to worry about what happened. David doesn't believe in his coach and still worries over his missed shot and as he his changing clothes he notices a small furry creature next to him.

At first he thinks it's just a stuffed animal, David and the Worry Beast is a fiction book that starts out with David playing in a basketball game. At first he thinks it's just a stuffed animal, but quickly realizes how its alive and is afraid of it. When he gets home his parents try to console him about the game however that doesn't make him worry any less. When he gets to his room he realizes that the creature is bigger than before and it tells him that it is his worry beast and will cause him to worry even more.

David continues to worry as he gets to school and the beast continues to grow larger and does so until he talks about his anxiety and resolves the issues. I feel that the book would be interesting for children because of its colorful illustrations that are drawn accurately to what is being told in the story. It also helps enhance the story by showing the growth of the worry beast throughout the book so that children can get a visual representation of how much David has been worrying. The story itself allows children to think about their worries and how they can talk about it with others to get rid of it just like the stories problem and resolution.

The characters were convincing because they all accurately portrayed how the adults would react when dealing with a child with anxiety and how a child might feel with anxiety. Interestingly David's fellow classmates represented a variety of cultural groups which also included the author and illustrator's, but the other cultural groups had no impact in the story.

  4. Great for children to see that anxiety is natural and give some tools how to cope. Kevin Henkes is one of my favorite authors for children. Wemberely is a mouse who worries about everything, and by the end of the book, she is beginning to realize that much of what she worries about, has no cause for worry.

    This book is designed to help children feel more in control of their worry, and their ability to manage and work through it.

    It also is good for guiding children to be able to identify their anxiety and what is causing it. A great resource for older children, this book is broken down into parts that help give children methods and tools for dealing with their anxiety, while also explaining some of the more serious problems involved with anxiety and the need for counseling, in some children, to help work through it.

    Self-calming techniques and a number rating scale, for identifying levels of anxiety are some of the many techniques presented.
